Fredericton, New Brunswick, January 29, 2010 -- Meritus University, the new online university based in Fredericton, will grant one full tuition-waiver award to the spouse of a fallen Canadian Force member serving Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.
The Meritus award supports Project Hero, a national program in which participating Canadian colleges and universities cover the cost of tuition for the children of fallen soldiers.
Meritus, the official online university of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will be recognized for its unique offering to the spouse of a fallen soldier during the annual“Toronto Maple Leafs Military Night” game honoring Canadian Force personnel at the January 30th Leafs challenge against the Canucks.
“While other universities look after the next generation, Meritus is ensuring that a fallen soldier’s spouse will have an opportunity to pursue undergraduate or graduate-level education at a time when his or her financial situation and/or personal or professional obligations may make it difficult to do so,” said Alex Reed, Vice President Operations and University Registrar.
“I am delighted Meritus University has joined Project Hero by way of supporting the spouse of one of our fallen heroes,” said Kevin Reed,Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 31 Brigade,Service Units and Vice Chairman of Grey Horse Corp.
Project Hero’s Reed further explained, “To have Meritus University join Project Hero’s cause, as a Canadian post-secondary online education provider, ensures that the spouse has access to higher education without having to quit a job or relocate. This is a big step toward providing economic protection for the fallen’s family – not to mention the minimal disruption that online access to education poses.”
According to Meritus’ Alex Reed, “The online modality provides students with the flexibility required to balance work and home commitments along with schooling responsibilities. This allows for the flexibility that adult learners need and want in order to maintain their employment while earning their university degree -- without the constraints of reporting to a physical classroom.”
