Fredericton, NB, (Sept 28, 2009)
Fredericton-based Meritus University marks its milestone one-year anniversary this month. In October 2008, Meritus University, Canada’s new online university, accepted its first cohort of students. One year later, Meritus University is welcoming new students on a monthly basis from across Canada and indeed the world, including Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Far East.
“We are excited to embark on a new year, providing unique and accessible higher education opportunities to Canadians and others around the world,” says Meritus President Dr. John Crossley. “We have been warmly received by the New Brunswick community as well as by students across the globe and hope to maintain our position as a provider of quality higher education in the country for many years to come.”
Current students are studying one of three university programs: Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Information Technology, or the MBA program. Meritus has continued accepting new students on a rolling enrolment basis since opening its doors last fall. The university’s current students, many of whom are working professionals employed by businesses across Canada and the world, find this enrollment model accommodating. As the number of university applicants has increased, Meritus’ course offerings and programs have expanded to suit diverse student interest and ever-changing market demand.
At the undergraduate level, students at Meritus University currently pursue studies in Business or IT and may specialize in their chosen degree program. Students in the BBA program may select from the following eight specializations: Management, Global Management, Finance, Marketing, Communication, Human Resources Management, Integrated Supply Chain Management or Hospitality Management. Students in the BITM program may specialize in Visual Communications.
Meritus University’s master’s students may focus their graduate studies in Business on Global Management, Information Technology Management, Human Resources Management, Health Care Management, Technology Management, or Marketing.
Meritus’ programs facilitate critical thinking, collaboration and leadership by integrating academic theory with best-practice applications. The university’s courses are taught by Canadian faculty, many who instruct while maintaining prominent positions in their fields of expertise. Meritus University’s curriculum is based on realistic problem solving and small, interactive classes. Students benefit from accelerated time-to-completion and innovative learning methodologies that are relevant to the challenges they face in the real world and in their chosen careers.
Dean of Business and Information Technology, Dr. Harvey Silverstein says, “Meritus’ curriculum has been designed with Canadian content and context in mind. Our students acquire the knowledge and skills sought by Canadian HR Directors. Through discussions and collaborations with classmates worlds apart, students also learn how to work together across cultures – a commonplace practice in the modern marketplace.”
